ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR DR. AB. MUMIN AB. GHANI (CHAIRMAN)

Dr. Ab. Mumin Ab. Ghani graduated from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 1979, with Bachelor of Economics (Honours). He later obtained Diploma in Education (UKM) in 1979, Diploma in Public Administration (INTAN) in 1983 and MBA (UKM) in 1987. He finished his PhD (Islamic Studies) in 1998 at University of Malaya (UM).
 
Previously he served as an Administrative Diplomatic Offi cers (PTD). During that period, he was attached to several units in Department of Prime Minister, among others are Economic Planning Unit and Islamic Economic Resources Development Committee.
 
At Academy of Islamic Studies UM, he was previously the Deputy Dean, Faculty of Shariah; Coordinator, Department of Shariah and Management; and Deputy Director of the Academy. He, at present, contributes as an academic panel for several institutions of higher education and also Management Academy of YPEIM. Besides, he involve in establishing the Ummah Development Index, IKIM. As an Associate Professor, he has written various books and articles related to Islamic transactions (Fiqh al-Muamalat), Islamic economics, Islamic management, Islamic banking and fi nance, Zakat, Dinar and Dakwah.
 
He is currently the Head, Department of Shariah and Management, Academy of Islamic Studies, UM and also the Member of UM Senate Committee.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR DR. HAJI MUHAMAD RAHIMI OSMAN
 
Ustaz Muhamad Rahimi Osman graduated from University of Malaya (UM) in 1987, holding Bachelor of Shariah (Honours). He obtained his Master in Islamic Economics in 1996 from University of Yarmouk, Jordan. He then obtained his PhD at Ahmad Ibrahim Kuliyyah of Laws, IIUM, in 2007.
 
After the postgraduate degree, he joined Universiti Teknology MARA (UiTM). There, he served as Coordinator of Islamic Social Science at Centre for Islamic Education. He was also the Head of Zakat Unit at the Centre for Integrated Islamic Services; and the Deputy Director at Department of Islamic Education and Civilization; Centre for Islamic Thought and Understanding (CITU). He has produced several researches and writings related to Islamic economics, Islamic commercial transactions (Fiqh al-Muamalat), Islamic banking and Zakat.
 
He was appointed as the Director of Centre for Islamic Thought and Understanding (CITU), UiTM, which was upgraded from the university’s Centre for Islamic Education with role to provide university courses related to Islamic education and Islamic civilisation.

DR. UZAIMAH IBRAHIM

Dr. Uzaimah Ibrahim graduated from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in 1994 with LL.B (Honours), in 1993 and LL.B (Shariah) (Honours) in 1994. She subsequently pursued her study and received Master in Comparative Law (MCL) from IIUM in 1996. She later obtained PhD from University of Wales, UK, in 2001.
 
She joined IIUM as a lecturer since 1993. She has conducted a number of researches related to Islamic commercial law, Islamic jurisprudence, Islamic banking law, derivatives and securitisation. She has also conducted presentations in seminars and workshops and contributed a chapter to the Halsbury’s Laws of Malaysia published by Malaysian Law Journal.
 
She is currently an Assistant Professor at Ahmad Ibrahim Kuliyyah of Laws, IIUM. Beside that, she also serves as the Deputy Director of the IIUM Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance, which is an international centre for education and research in the respective area, established by IIUM in 2005.

DR. MUHAMMAD HUMAYON DAR
 
Dr Muhammad Humayon Abbas Dar is an Islamic banking and finance expert with professional experience in structuring Shariah compliant financial products for the institutions offering Islamic financial services, with considerable academic experience in different fields of economic and finance. Deeply committed to the industry, Dr Dar's other appointments are numerous. Amongst others, he currently sits on the Board of Directors of the Arab British Chamber of Commerce, and also serves as an Honorary Senior Visiting Fellow at Cass Business School. 

As a technical member of BMB Islamic's Shariah Supervisory Board, he also participates in Shariah coordination in addition to his various roles as CEO of BMB Islamic. Before founding BMB Islamic, he developed Dar Al Istithmar (a majority-owned subsidiary of Deutsche Bank) into an Euromoney award winning team of acclaimed Islamic financial innovators. Prior to that, Dr Dar was involved in setting up a first of its type MSc course in Islamic Economics, Banking & Finance at Loughborough University. Lately, he has helped Cass Business School (City University London) in offering an Executive MBA in Islamic Finance.

He is also associated with Institute of Islamic Banking & Insurance and is a member of the editorial board of its flagship publication New Horizon. A prolific author, he sits on the editorial boards of Review of Islamic Economics and International Journal of Islamic Financial Services. Dr Dar belongs to the first generation of qualified Islamic economists, with formal training in conventional and Islamic economics, as well as classical Islamic jurisprudence at the International Islamic University Islamabad, where he was personally tutored by the world's leading Islamic economists, jurists and thinkers. His higher studies include an MPhil and PhD (both in Economics) from Cambridge University where he conducted research on Islamic finance. His post-doctoral research has exclusively been on Islamic economics, banking and finance.

 

PROF. DR. MALIK MUHAMMAD MAHMUD AL-AWAN
 
A multi-disciplinary scholar of Islamic jurisprudence, Prof. Dr. Al-Awan has been engaged in Islamic Finance for the last thirty years. He completed his academic training in the Quran, Hadith, and the history of the Caliphate under the guidance of top Islamic scholars of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia during the 1950s and the Sixties. He majored in Classical Arabic Literature and Research Methodology for his 1970 B.A. from Punjab University before receiving his Masters in Comparative Economic Systems and Development Finance in 1972. He completed his L.L.B. in Islamic Jurisprudence and Contract Law at Punjab University before being awarded an L.L.M. degree in Comparative American Law from Boston University Law School in Boston, Massachusetts. He was awarded a PhD in International Finance in 1976 while he was working as a Research Fellow in Monetary Economics at Clark University, Massachusetts.

His first papers in Islamic Finance Methodology were published in USA in the 1970s. His highly acclaimed book on Foreign Capital & Development Process was published by University Press of America, Washington, D.C. in 1977. He served as Presidential Adviser to Government of Pakistan, Ministry of Production, in 1978 and served as Visiting Professor at Pakistan Institute of Management. From 1996 to 2006 he served as the Vice Chancellor and Provost at Global Studies Institute in Massachusetts.

He is a senior banking and insurance executive and is a practicing attorney of International Law with a broad specialization in Islamic Contract Law and Commercial Procedure. He is a recognized trainer of Shariah scholars and serves on the governing boards of a number of Islamic organizations in Asia and North America. He has been a Professor of Finance at top American universities and is a Professor Emeritus at Pakistan's National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST). He previously served as the Dean of the Faculty and Chief Academic Officer at International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF), an organization under Bank Negara Malaysia.
